![]() I believe this is where the enneagram could be of great use to psychology.Ĭurrently personality disorder is organized by symptom (Cluster A/B/C) She's a 6, so, the usual 6 dislike of overconfidence may have colored her lens a bitty bit. but ppl simply did not understand this when they named it.)Īlso, for all of Palmer's strong points as a mostly very good author, she kinda harps on this point a bit much. Something similar is the case with how you see "autistic" used to simply mean "asocial" in older texts, not the very specific clearly circumscribed syndrome it describes today (which is at its core to do with sensory processing, not sociality or lack thereof. You kinda see that often with psychological terms that they shift meaning as diagnostic categories shift & change as the scientific paradigms change.Īll those PD categories will probably be swept away in the next diagnostic manual, they're not uncontroversial among actual shrinks from what I've heard. (funfact: when Freud originally coined the term, it meant " introverted") It's worth noting that "narcissistic" is used here in the colloquial sense of "braggadocious, arrogant" - in reference to the greek legend, not in the sense of what has in the last 10 years or so been wrongfully(!) popularized as "abuser disorder". In a way, narcissists suffer less than Threes from the disregard of others, because they have themselves for company and because they are convinced of their own bright destiny. A bad time can be erased by a hike in the country, a good book, bright sunshine, a hot cup of tea. They need not constantly exert because "Life is good, and I'm glad I'm me." If others do not recognize their inner merit, Sevens will turn to themselves for comfort, rationalizing the rejection as no fault of their own. Sevens, equally desirous of the good attention of others, will see their regard as an accurate mirror of personal inner worth. They work far harder than they wish to, because their reward is not in feeling good, but in the power to command other people's respect. The focus of attention is on doing one thing very well, because a Three's value in the eyes of others depends on the brilliant accomplishment of a task. ![]() The real self may not exist, but one's credentials do. The psychological difference between the workaholic Three and the more truly narcissistic Seven is that for the Three, personal value rests on earned achievement. The proofs of achievement are having gotten to do a lot of fascinating things in life and having risen to the top without having gotten pinned down by permanent commitment. "I want to know I'm capable, but I do not have to prove myself.". want to know that they were accepted to compete in the best track, but they may not want to limit their other interests in order to push forward to top rank. Threes want power over others, because they measure themselves by the degree of other people's respect and regard. The proofs of a successful climb are image, security, title, and prestige. can resemble Threes on the surface, willing to compete, interested in winning, and certainly concerned with the mirroring of their own excellence through other people's eyes. Anyway, this one passage from The Enneagram by Palmer is the most helpful thing I've ever read on distinguishing between 7 and 3 (all emphasis mine): I promised myself I wouldn't waste actual money on this but here we are. I happened to go into a bookstore while waiting for a bus the other day and ended up buying books on the Enneagram by Helen Palmer, Don Riso, and Sandra Maitri.
